Bringing the
valley together.

Supporting nonprofits in the six counties of the San Luis Valley

How We Make More Possible

Our Goal, Vision & Commitment

Support Our Community

The Community Foundation of the San Luis Valley focuses on enhancing the lives of those who reside in the six counties of the San Luis Valley of Colorado. Using the tools of philanthropy, leadership development, technical assistance, and sustainable economic development, we build the capacity of the valley's nonprofits to help our rural communities.

The Community Foundation of the San Luis Valley embraces access, equity, and diversity as affirming the essential humanity of all people and as being basic to a healthy community and environment.

True partnerships are about shared agendas as well as combined resources, risks, and rewards. They are voluntary collaborations that build on the respective strengths and core competencies of each partner, optimize the allocation of resources and achieve mutually beneficial results over a sustained period. They imply linkages that increase resources, scale and impact.

About the Valley

The San Luis Valley is made up of six counties in Southern Colorado that are situated in an extensively high-altitude basin that covers approximately 8,000 square miles (roughly the same span as Massachusetts!). The average elevation is over 7,000 feet above sea level.

The economy is centered around agriculture, where principal crops are potatoes, head lettuce, barley, and quinoa. Tourism, education, and health care are also significant. The arts are quickly becoming an increasing force.

Even though the San Luis Valley is known as one of the poorest rural areas of Colorado, it is also known as a traditional, historic, multi-culturally rich area. Despite geographic isolation, the Valley is proudly home to an array of cultural entities including the Creede Repertory Theater, Fort Garland Museum, the Stations of the Cross Shrine, and many others.

The Valley has a lot to offer including amazing views, culture, attractions, food, recreation, and most importantly - amazing people.
